Gonzalo Ilabaca is a self-taught artist who was born in Concepcion, Chile in 1959. He studied medicine at the Catholic University of Chile, and left during his fourth year to entirely devote himself to painting. He became somewhat of a nomad, traveling throughout Europe and being inspired by the culture, and learning by studying the works of Van Gogh and Edvard Munch. In 1989 Ilabaca won the Critics Award, for the best exhibition of the year, for his retrospective at Las Condes Cultural Institute in Santiago. He has been subject to numerous solo exhibitions throughout Chile, and has work in the collection of important museums such as the National Museum of Fine Arts in Santiago, the Museum of Visual Arts also in Santiago, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Valparaíso.

“El Juego de Eros" “This painting represents the idea that Eros is the energy that moves the world. A young man leaves the forest where he has encountered his love. But we live in the times that we live, always returning to nature, the Forest, because it is in the forest where the seed grows."
