Yellow Warblers and Rufus Hummingbird embodies a new type of wildlife art based on natural observation combined with a superior level of artistry. I aim to re-create the exuberance, spontaneity and emotional power of nature, yet still maintain a high degree of scientific accuracy. I draw upon many years of experience observing nature in the and studying the techniques and philosophy of the great painters of the past.

Yellow Warblers and Rufus Hummingbird is conceived entirely in my mind’s eye. The feeling of life, depth and movement I value come from a combination of the mind working together with the heart, in a very free and spontaneous way. This is what differentiates my paintings from contemporary illustrative “wildlife art”. By working this way I hope to push contemporary wildlife painting beyond its flat photographic affect and inspire others to strive for a more experiential ways of painting birds and animals by working directly from nature.
